How to lighten up
- Serve images in modern formats (WebP, AVIF) at the size actually displayed, almost always the biggest item.
- Defer or remove third-party scripts: every measurement tool or widget adds weight on every visit.
- Enable caching and compression (Brotli): returning visitors then re-download almost nothing.
- Host fonts locally and load only the weights you use.
- Choose a host powered by renewable energy, the effect on the server share is immediate.
Method
The weight actually transferred is measured by Google PageSpeed Insights, then converted into energy and CO₂ using the Sustainable Web Design model (0.81 kWh per GB transferred; 442 g of CO₂ per kWh for the global mix, 50 g for renewable hosting). The calculation accounts for returning visitors whose browser already has the page cached. These figures are orders of magnitude, not certified carbon accounting.
